Our Program
As an area of scholarship, Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGS) has several focuses.
WGS examines the contributions, perspectives, and experiences of women in all areas of human endeavor, including the status, portrayal, or achievements of women in areas such as art, history, literature, science, business, engineering, and medicine. WGS also looks at gender and sexuality as fundamental categories of meaning, and offers a variety of interdisciplinary approached to the study of gender, and sexuality. Additionally, WGS explores the pervasive and often unacknowledged ways that gender and sexuality change our social institutions, individual knowledge, and interpersonal relationships.
The WGS perspective exposes knowledge previously invisible in our intellectual environment and develops theoretical perspectives concerning these omissions. Our purpose is to bring an awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the study of women, gender, and sexuality to the students, faculty, and staff of UAH and to the North Alabama community. We are one of the few interdisciplinary programs on campus, collaborating with faculty in art and art history, business management, engineering, English, history, kinesiology, nursing, philosophy, political science, psychology, sociology, theatre, and world languages and culture (among others).
We offer a Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Minor that UAH students from all Colleges can complete as a complement to their major programs of study.
The WGS Program promotes the social awareness of women’s issues and issues important to gender/sexual minorities in the Huntsville and North Alabama communities through our extensive programming and events, including inviting guest speakers to campus, sponsoring and supporting theatre, art, music, and literary events.
