Bachelor of Arts-5 years: Art (Art Education)

The Art Education program provides students with a broad background in digital and traditional art studio courses, as well as an understanding of art in the global context, to help inspire a new generation of artists.

The degree requires at least 132 credit hours with courses in the College of Education and in the Department of Art, Art History & Design. Admission to the teacher education program requires cumulative 2.75 or higher GPA, clear background/fingerprint check, and passing the AECTP (Alabama Basic Skills assessment). The program prepares graduates to license as P-12 art teachers. Our undergraduate students develop a range of visual art skills as well as a deep understanding of pedagogy - the art and science of teaching.

A capstone experience, “Principles for Teaching Art” focuses on specific approaches teachers use to introduce students from preschool though grade 12 to the visual arts as both makers and viewers. The capstone is completed during the final semester on campus to prepare for a required 12-hour teaching internship in which the student observes and student teaches in an area elementary and middle/high school for 15 weeks.
